Regain or Improve Your Powerful Golf Swing Through Physical Therapy

At Holland Therapy, we believe a specific body limitation contributes to every golf swing flaw and injury and in order to improve you golf swing and experience a powerful golf game, you need to achieve a healthy, balanced and flexible body.

A healthy spine and hip rotation are crucial to a healthy golf swing. Golf is a rotational game and if a golfer's body is unable to rotate, compensatory movements will occur, causing all kinds of golf swing flaws, sports injuries, and discomfort. Physical therapy can help relieve and prevent skeletal and muscular dysfunction, as well as introducing pain management with treatments that may include manual therapies, therapeutic exercise, patient education, home exercise programs and modalities when appropriate.

A therapy program begins with a comprehensive evaluation aimed at developing a plan of care that will promote your mobility and flexibility, reduce pain, restore loss of function, and prevent future injuries. This golf-specific, “hands on” approach to physical therapy care is always focused on getting you back to your full athletic potential as soon as possible. Each course of action is custom designed to meet the goals, needs and physical capabilities of each individual.

A additional therapy that can be added to traditional physical therapy approaches is BodyTalk. Originally developed by Australian doctor John Veltheim, BodyTalk has been assisting many professional athletes with all aspects of their games.

BodyTalk works on the premise that the body works as a symphony. Much like the parts of the body, if any instruments of a symphony are “out of tune,” or under communicating, performance is compromised, and all you are left with is noise. All of the systems and parts of the body need to be synchronized and communicating efficiently to perform well and be at optimum health.

Many PGA and LPGA golfers, including Annika Sorenestam, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen, have used the Body Talk system to help them improve their games, recovery and focus. Combined with traditional physical therapy approaches, BodyTalk has worked in concert to assist many athletes and golfers with improved performance and overall athletic health.

How does BodyTalk work?

The primary principle of the BodyTalk System is to balance the body-mind
complex. The bodymind complex consists of an intricate weaving together
of physiological functioning, emotional/mental interactions, biochemical
functioning, hereditary influences, genetics, and environmental factors.
Within each human being is the “innate wisdom” of the body which allows
our bodies to maintain equilibrium. This is addressed as follows:

1. The BodyTalk System™ uses neuromuscular biofeedback in order to
assist communication with body’s innate wisdom. This feedback provides
the practitioner with either a “yes” or “no” response to a series of questions
asked to the body. This provides a framework in which the practitioner can
obtain the conditions of the bodymind complex in order to create
optimum health.

2. The BodyTalk practitioner adheres to a strict protocol to determine
what needs to be balanced so that the bodymind can be in a state of harmony.
This involves linking different endocrines, organs, and/or body parts as to
balance communication between these areas. This is done on a physioloical,
biochemical, emotional, and energetic level.

3. The practitioner lightly touches the area that needs to be balanced.
The practitioner then taps the head of the client very gently with his/her
fingers in order to address & restore the imbalance. This technique is based
on Hatha Yoga philosophy, and when the brain is activated in this manner,
it increases brain activity in relation to these areas of contact.

4. Then the practitioner lightly taps the chest in order to store the changes
in the energetic heart complex. This allows the newly balanced state
to be stored.
